Show Dem. (Show Democracy) is a concept conceived by Cleo, launched alongside her campaign to be PCC.
Show Dem seeks to raise awareness about elections, voting systems and other ways of engaging with the democratic process in order to encourage a wider range of people to become politically engaged. As a local politician Cleo is committed to encouraging citizens in having their say on matters that are of concern to them. As Lord Mayor, Cleo was noted as being one of the most able, accessible, welcoming and fair Chair of Council meetings particularly in relation to her interactions with the members of the Public who attended to watch, ask questions or make statements.
An active member of the Afrikan Connexions Consortium which was formed in Bristol in 2016 with an aim of ‘power sharing beyond tokenism’, in 2020 Cleo spent time supporting young people to set up the ‘Afrikan Youth Assembly’ a forum for citizens of Afrikan descent to come together to discuss concerns and find solutions.
‘I believe in meeting people where they are and demystifying the political process at all levels to encourage greater community engagement because quite often these systems can be confusing and inaccessible. I was particularly proud to have been involved in encouraging over 200 statements of support for a motion that I proposed. I hope this will continue going forwards, because although it shouldn’t always be the case that it is those who who turn up who get to make the decisions, it is often the instance.’
